HALC runs English courses at our Champion Street campus and in the community. These include:

Hagley Adult Literacy Centre (HALC)

Workplace – for those in employment -full time or part time or casual. Work one to one with a tutor on workplace communication, English language skills, workplace maths and computing.  2-3 hours per week.

Day programmes:

Everyday English for life in New Zealand

Hagley Adult Literacy Centre (HALC) offers free part-time English language courses (up to 8 hours per week) to help adult learners settle into life in New Zealand.  There are nine part-time courses available ranging in levels from Developing English language to Intermediate ESOL.  Learners gain language skills and a better understanding of New Zealand culture and customs.

Courses are on-site at our Champion Street campus Edgeware and also in Wigram, Papanui and Upper Riccarton.

Learners who have PELT (pre-purchased English language tuition) funds can attend the part-time English language classes.

Day/evening programmes:

Workplace Communication

Workplace communication courses are available at HALC for adults who are in paid employment (casual, part-time or full-time).  These courses are free for residents and are for between 1- and 4-hours tuition per week.  The course is either one-to-one with a tutor or in small groups of up to five learners.  Topics covered include everyday Kiwi English, listening and speaking, NZ workplace culture, health and safety in the workplace, filling in workplace forms, computing and maths.
